Instructor: Jay P. Shah, MD

We are pleased to announce another offering of an exciting education opportunity - a workshop exploring the role of spinal segmental sensitization (SSS) in chronic neuromusculoskeletal pain. This workshop will be presented in November 2007 by Jay P. Shah, MD. The workshop will combine lecture, case presentations, and exercises for physicians who want to improve their palpation skills and learn objective clinical findings that can be integrated with needling and physical medicine strategies. To assure a high quality learning experience, attendance is limited to 35 participants.

Purpose and Objectives:

Spinal Segmental Sensitization (SSS) is a hyperactive state of the dorsal horn caused by bombardment of nociceptive impulses from sensitized damaged tissue.  Manifestations in the sensitized spinal segment include dermatomal allodynia and hyperalgesia, sclerotomal tenderness and myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) within the involved myotomes.

Improved examination techniques, that are objective and quantitative, are used to identify the tissues and pain mechanisms involved in the patient with chronic pain. These easy-to-learn techniques are very helpful in the evaluation and management of chronic pain.  Furthermore, their application before and after treatments aimed at desensitizing the involved spinal segment provides the clinician and patient objective, reproducible physical findings to guide treatment outcomes

This new workshop will explore Spinal Segmental Sensitization and physicians will learn needling techniques and physical medicine modalities to desensitize the involved spinal segment and finally how to determine objectively whether the physical manifestations of SSS were eliminated following the treatment selection.

Accreditation:

The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture designates the Workshop for a maximum of 13 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Each physician should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the activity.

Target Audience:

Pain specialists, physiatrists, family practitioners, internists, neurologists, anesthesiologists - physicians who want to improve their palpation skills and learn objective clinical findings that can be integrated with needling and physical medicine strategies

Learning Objectives:

The overall objectives for physicians attending the Workshop:

  • Analyze the dynamic relationship between primary afferent nociceptors and surrounding tissues and the concept of peripheral sensitization
  • Interpret the concept of polysensory synaptic convergence, activity-dependent neuroplasticity and central sensitization of dorsal horn neurons
  • Understand the critical role of sensitization and neuroplasticity in generating and perpetuating neuromusculoskeletal pain
  • Discuss the unique neurobiology of muscle pain
  • Understand the components of spinal facilitation and how it's generated and amplified
  • Discuss mechanisms by which even Abeta fiber stimulation can perpetuate spinal facilitation and maintain chronic pain states
  • Review the interplay of somatovisceral/viscerosomatic integration and spinal facilitation
  • Discuss limitations of the fibromyalgia construct
  • Determine the reproducible physical manifestations of spinal segmental sensitization (SSS) in chronic neuromusculoskeletal pain
  • Demonstrate the application of improved quantitative and objective diagnostic procedures used to determine the dermatomes, myotomes and sclerotomes of spinal segments involved in SSS and chronic neuromusculoskeletal pain
  • Learn needling techniques and physical medicine modalities to desensitize the involved spinal segment, eliminate chronic myofascial trigger points and alleviate chronic neuromusculoskeletal pain
  • Determine objectively whether the physical manifestations of SSS were eliminated following your treatment selection
  • Understand the common perpetuating factors in neuromusculoskeletal pain and dysfunction and utilize specific techniques for removing them

The workshop will be held as follows:

    November 17-18, 2007
    Hyatt Regency Phoenix
    122 N Second Street
    Phoenix, Arizona 85004

REGISTRATION

Attendance is limited to 35 participants
in order to provide the optimum learning experience. Complete the attached registration form and submit it to the Academy's office. Registrations will be accepted in the order received until the course is full at 35 participants.  After the course is full, you will be notified and your fee returned, or you may go on the 'wait list' should there be a cancellation.  To avoid missing out, you should send in your registration and make a room reservation as soon as possible. Each participant is responsible for his or her own travel and hotel expenses. Registrations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.
