Purpose and Objectives

The Medical  Acupuncture Review Course has been developed to provide a broad-based refresher course on the major subject matter areas with which a  well-trained physician should be familiar. The review course is especially useful as a refresher for those who obtained their acupuncture training some time ago and for those who are seeking an organized  review prior to taking the ABMA Board Certification Examination.  The overall objectives of the Review Course are to:

  • Review and solidify  previously acquired knowledge and experience in medical acupuncture.
  • Have reinforced understanding  of the basic material appropriate for a physician practicing acupuncture in North America.
  • Review and refresh the participant's exposure and awareness of certain specialized  aspects of acupuncture not always utilized in traditional practice settings.

Need

Many physicians  practicing medical acupuncture today obtained their original training a number of years ago. There are excellent training programs available where a physician can obtain initial training in medical acupuncture.  There are also an increasing number of learning opportunities in  specialized areas or in new areas of medical acupuncture. But, there  are limited opportunities available for physicians to obtain an organized review of that original knowledge acquired years earlier. With the development of a national Board Certification Examination  there is more definite need to have such a broad-based course available  to assist those preparing for the examination. The Academy members  have indicated in annual surveys that this as a definite educational  need. As a result, the Academy's Education Committee developed the  Review Course specifically in response to the education needs of these two groups of physicians.

Who Should Attend

This Review  Course is intended for those physicians who have completed a formal training program in medical acupuncture of 200 or more hours, or  have obtained equivalent training through other means, and have  one or more years experience in the clinical use of medical acupuncture. Those physicians who obtained their training four or more years  ago should find the Review Course useful as a refresher to that original training. Those physicians who intend to sit for the ABMA Board Certification Examination within the next 12 months should find the Review Course particularly helpful as an organized review of the basic areas of knowledge that would be covered in such an examination.

Accreditation

The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture is accredited by the Accreditation  Council for Continuing Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture designates this educational activity for a maximum of 22 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.  Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Course Organization
This course  is organized into 6 sessions. The first two sections are Home Study sessions which require review of material and completion of case  reports and study guide aides. Each Home Study section will take from 4-6 hours to complete. There is a homework requirement to be  submitted to the course instructor at the beginning of the on-site  session. Completion of all Home Study assignments prior to the on-site session is necessary for the student to obtain CME Credits for the Home Study as well as to enable full and effective participation of the student in the Review Course sessions.

The on-site  portion of the Course is organized into four sections of 3+ hours each.

Home Study Part I

Case Management Reports -Home Study (4+Hours)

The general objective for this section is to review the various types of paradigms and to reinforce the learning of the paradigm.

The student will select from his or her personal caseload three patients who have presented for medical acupuncture. The student will analyze each case according to a different operating paradigm of medical acupuncture and will suggest a treatment appropriate to the particular paradigm being illustrated. The student should be prepared to justify to other students in the course both the case analysis and proposed treatment.

The student will choose from the following formats of evaluation and treatment of the 3 cases. At least one must be from Group A and at least one must be from Group B. The third case report may be chosen from any of the remaining categories.

A-1. Neuroanatomic and Myofascial Acupuncture
A-2. Six energy meridian acupuncture (Jing Mia, Jing Loa treatment systems)

B-1. San Jiao and Zang Fu Syndrome analysis and treatment
B-2. 5 phase or 5 element constitutional and functional analysis and treatment

C    Ear Acupuncture - 1 acute case report plus 1 chronic case report

References appropriate for these Home Study requirements can be found under the corresponding sessions for the on-site sessions of the program.

HOME STUDY PART II

Didactic Review - Home Study (6+Hours)

The objectives of Section B are to review point groupings and their relationships; to review "command points" and associated elements; and to review the 5 phase model which is one of the most difficult models for physicians who have not been trained in that model.

1. Students will complete study guides and mark point locations  on a study guide workbook for review of specialized points and point groupings.

2. Students  will complete work sheets reviewing Chinese theories of the systematic  correspondences within the 5 phase model of universal relationships.

3. Students  will complete selected readings in the socio-economic context of  acupuncture and reviews of certain specialized acupuncture micro-systems.
