Letters to the Editor

To the Editor: I am pleased to read Dr Robert Shulman's article on Tibial Shin Splint treatment in Medical Acupuncture, Vol 13, No 1. As an experienced sport physician, I have treated this condition often with very gratifying results from acupuncture, and usually with the activation of the Tendino-Muscular Meridians (TMM) subsystem. My only question is regarding the choice of ST and GB as the TMM activated. In my experience with medial symptoms, as are described in the article, I have employed the KI and SP TMM, as their trajectories lie along the medial aspect of the lower leg. I am eager for your reply.

The Author's Reply: In review of my chart notes, I find that 1 of the points listed in the paper, "Tibial Shin Splint Treated with a Single Acupuncture Session," is not correct. GB 44 was not used. Rather, ST 41 was taken as a concentration point on the ST Tendinomuscular meridian. Dr Frank has asked why this meridian was chosen when, in his experience, the pain of shin splints is usually in the medial part of the leg. This patient had pain and tenderness to palpation at the distal portion of the tibialis anterior, therefore putting the "lesion" in the zone of the Stomach Tendinomuscular meridian.

Editor's Note: We welcome and encourage your letters, e-mails, phone calls, and all correspondence to this column.

Correction: In the article "Self-Rated Pain and Functional Status with Acupuncture" (Volume13/Number 1 issue of Medical Acupuncture), Joanne Borg-Stein, MD, should be listed as the 2nd author, Paul E. Satwicz, MD, should be the 3rd author.
